Stromal luteoma of the ovary: case report

Souto Selma B , Carvalho-Braga Daniel , Baptista Pedro Vieira , Fernandes Ana S , Beires Jorge , Medina Jose Luis

Introduction: The stromal luteoma of the ovary is a rare tumour occurring mostly in post menopausal women. Endocrine symptoms and sometimes virilizing signs may be observed, although abnormal vaginal bleeding is the most frequent manifestation. This tumour is surrounded by ovarian stroma being entirely composed of luteinized cells devoid of crystals of Reinke. Hyperthecosis of ovarian stroma is often observed. Its evolution is always benign.Case report: ...

Intra-articular (IA) glucocorticoids (GCs) injections are effective in controlling joint inflammation but limited by short duration of action and off-target side effects. Gellan sheared hydrogels (SHs) area drug delivery vehicle, with unique thinning properties and enhanced release kinetics. We hypothesise that a combination of SHs and pre-receptor metabolism activated GCs provide slow-release drug delivery to target inflammation and minimise side-effects. We the release kinet...

Intracranial tumors (IT) comprise a heterogenous group of neoplasias (e.g., pituitary/brain tumors and craniopharyngiomas), characterized by difficult diagnosis based on MRI, challenging prognostic predictors and lack of effective therapeutic strategies. In addition, these tumors are usually associated with neurological disorders and severe comorbidities (e.g., those associated with Cushing syndrome, Acromegaly, etc.), worsening the quality life of patients. In this context, s...

High-grade astrocytomas (HGAs) remain the most prevalent and malignant brain tumor based on its locally aggressive behavior, being glioblastoma (grade-IV astrocytoma) the most lethal. The current standard treatment for glioblastomas consists of surgery followed by radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. However, the average period of survival is about 14 months after the first intervention. Therefore, there is a clear clinical need for the identification of novel diagnostic, prognos...

Epicardial fat accumulation and coronary artery calcification in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Perdomo Carolina M , Casajús Ana Ezponda , García Goñi Marta , Zapata Cardenas Juana K , Beloqui Ruiz Óscar , Fruhbeck Gema , Bastarrika Alemañ Gorka , Escalada Javier

Patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease, particularly patients with liver fibrosis. Studies have shown a relationship between epicardial fat/coronary calcium and myocardial ischemia.Aim: Quantify epicardial fat and coronary calcium assessed by computed tomography (CT) in patients with NAFLD. Additionally, determine whether patients with hepatic fibrosis quantitatively assessed by liver el...
